Menopause Myths Dispelled

Common myths we’re here to tell you are just not true.

This is a common misconception!

Many women experience symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats during perimenopause, even while still having periods. These symptoms can persist for up to 10 years or more, long after the final period.

Menopause is officially defined as one year without periods, but the transition can be a unique journey for each woman. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, we’re here to help you understand and navigate your own experience.

While not every woman will gain weight during menopause, many notice a shift in how and where they carry weight—often leading to a collection of belly fat that wasn’t there before.

This can be attributed to a drop in estrogen levels and the natural aging process, which may slow metabolism and reduce muscle mass.

But fear not!

With a tailored plan focusing on weight training, increased protein intake, and more fiber (while cutting back on added sugars), we can help you adapt to these changes.

While some women may adjust to lower estrogen levels and find their symptoms improve, it’s important to note that estrogen levels will never return to premenopausal levels.

Instead, women will exist in a low estrogen state, which can impact long-term health, including bone density and cardiovascular health.

Additionally, vaginal and bladder tissues may continue to atrophy, leading to sexual health concerns and recurrent UTIs.

Changes in brain function and skin elasticity are also part of this new normal.

Being menopausal means your ovaries are no longer producing estrogen, and while only 25% of women do not experience noticeable symptoms, profound physiological changes are still occurring.

Bone loss, for example, occurs at a rate of 2% per year in the first three years of perimenopause, then slows to 0.05% per year after menopause.

Changes in blood vessels during this transition can lead to chronic cardiac disease later on.

Preventive measures, including lifestyle changes and possibly hormone therapy, can be crucial for protecting long-term health.

Even if periods become irregular and hot flashes occur, the ovaries may still be ovulating, meaning pregnancy is still possible.

Many of us have heard stories of “change of life” babies! Until you’ve gone 12 months without a period, you can still conceive.

It’s important to consider options that can help regulate your periods and alleviate perimenopausal symptoms simultaneously. There are many ways to accomplish both goals while still feeling fantastic!

While a blood test can provide some insights, diagnosing perimenopause and menopause is often more nuanced.

Many women find tracking their cycles and symptoms to be vital, as hormone levels can fluctuate significantly during this time.

For those who have undergone a hysterectomy, have an IUD, or have had an endometrial ablation, a simple blood test checking FSH levels and estrogen may be helpful, but it should be done on two separate occasions, six to twelve weeks apart. Relying solely on blood tests without considering clinical history may not yield the best treatment options.

We can explore safe and effective treatments early in perimenopause without needing blood tests.

On the contrary, many women find their sex lives improve after menopause! With the absence of pregnancy concerns and newfound freedoms, intimacy can flourish.

While vaginal dryness and tissue thinning can be issues, they are easily addressed with localized vaginal estrogen treatments that can make a significant difference.

Recent evidence supports the use of localized estrogen, even for women who thought they could never use it, such as cancer survivors. Additionally, water-based lubricants and vaginal moisturizers can enhance comfort.

Changes in libido may occur, but these can be effectively managed with lifestyle adjustments and hormonal options.
